Low-Cal Versions of Your Favorite Cocktails
Summer is in full swing, and between Memorial Day and Independence Day it’s likely that you’ve overdone it on the calories. What many people don’t realize is that much of the e xtra calories at these summer BBQs is from alcoholic drinks!
So that you don’t make the same mistake on Labor Day, or if you want to have a get together of your own, here are a few recipes for lower calorie versions of some favorite cocktails that are low on sugar, not on flavor.
Frozen Margarita: Original, 500 calories; Our version, 179 calories
Ingredients for 2 servings:
¼ cup tequila Kosher salt
1 ½ tablespoons orange liqueur Lime wedges
½ juice of fresh limes 12 ice cubes
3 tablespoons finely granulated sugar
Directions: Use the lime wedges to help the salt stick to the rim of the glass. Blend the remaining ingredients in a blender until the mixture is frothy. Pour into salted glasses and garnish with lime wedges.
Sangria: Original, 120 calories; Our version, 50 calories
Ingredients for 12 servings:
1 ½ liters of dry white wine
½ liter of soda water
½ liter of Fresca
16 oz of frozen mixed fruit (peaches, pears and raspberries recommended)
Cut peach and pear slices into bite sized pieces. Combine Fresca, soda water and wine in a large pitcher. Add fruit and chill before serving.
