Best Foods to Eat at a BBQ without Blowing your Diet
Summer holiday BBQs can be full of hidden calorie bombs. If you’re hosting a party, you have some control over the types of food that will be served, but it can be harder to stick to your diet when you’re at someone else’s party. Here are some of the best foods to eat at a BBQ without blowing your diet, as well as some foods to avoid.
Do Eat: Veggie Tray
You can never go wrong with fresh veggies. Depending on your exact diet plan you may choose to avoid the more sugary offerings, like carrots, or you may decide to forego the high-fat dressing that is usually served with them.
Do Eat: Grilled Chicken
Because of its high protein content, grilled chicken is a good fit for any dieter who eats meat. Try to avoid sugary marinades and condiments.
Do Eat: Watermelon
Watermelon, while technically a high glycemic index food, is not the carbohydrate bomb that you might exp ect. As the name suggests, it’s mostly water, and it will be your best dessert option at most any BBQ.
Potato salad, pasta salad, macaroni salad… these are salads in name only. They are almost always a diet busting combination of high carb foods and mayonnaise. Same goes for coleslaw, which tends to have lots of added sugar.
Avoid: BBQ sauce
Barbecue sauce is delicious, but you might be surprised how much sugar it contains. If you can find a good, low sugar version that you like, go for it. Otherwise, it’s best to avoid this condiment.
