The calves are the back muscle of the lower leg, and it’s important to train the calf muscles so that you don’t get the dreaded “chicken leg” look, scrawny legs with a big upper body. To help you build your calf muscles, here are some of the best ways to gain muscle in your lower legs.
Seated Barbell Calf Raise
Sit on a flat bench with your feet on the floor, toes up on a block, holding a barbell weight on your lap, roughly 3 inches away from your knees. Squeeze your calf muscles to lift your heels off the floor and as high as you can, keeping your toes on the block. Slowly lower your heels back to the floor.
Standing Barbell Calf Raise
Stand with feet shoulder width apart, with your toes and balls of your feet up on a block, heels on the floor, and a barbell weight across the back of your shoulders. Keep your knees straight (but not locked) and engage your calf muscles to lift your heels off the floor and as high as possible, so that you’re standing on just the balls of your feet. Slowly lower your heels down to the floor again.
